Live Guest portraits

Live guest portrait painting that captures your guests in real time, creating individual artworks they can take home from your event.

How it works

1. I set up at your wedding or event
I arrive before guests arrive and set up my painting station. My assistant will take photos of some guests as they arrive, allowing me to get started while the ceremony takes place.

2. Guests are painted live throughout the event
Guests usually then come over, once they see a few finished ones. My assistant will chat to them, explain the process and grab their photos.

3. Each portrait is created on the spot
I paint the guests throughout the night, in front of everyone. Guests are free to watch, chat and become part of the process, and my assistant will be able to give out finished portraits, coordinate and mingle to allow me more painting time.

4. Guests take their artwork home
Finished portraits are handed to guests as a keepsake on the day or carefully packaged for collection.

I had a wonderful experience with Poppy painting my wedding guests! I was so busy all night I didn’t even have time to greet her but it seemed she found her place perfectly and was a popular attraction painting away all night. I managed to see some of her drawings and it’s amazing I was able to guess each guest illustration before I even read their names, that’s how accurate her painting are of each person and I love that! After the event I was given a digital folder of each guest illustration & photo, plus extra footage from the night and I really appreciate that because when you’re so busy all night things like that make life that much better.

Poppy painted guest portraits for us at our wedding and she couldn’t have done a more perfect job! What do you paint with?

I paint in either watercolour on high quality watercolour paper.

How big are the paintings?

I create A5 paintings, which 148x210cm.

How long will the painting take to complete?

I aim to complete each character painting in 5-6 minutes. This averages around 10 per hour, which includes couples. I do have options for faceless portraits, which means I can cover around 15 guests per hour. I often limit each guest to just one painting, to ensure as many guests have their portraits painted.

Can we request certain people to be painted?

Sure. I try to start my time by painting the main guests, such as parents of the couple, siblings and grandparents. I then move onto a first come first serve bases.

Do we need to pose for the whole time?

Not at all. I know weddings and parties are busy times, and spending 10 minutes standing still to pose can be daunting and not for everyone. Therefore my assitant will take a quick photo and I then complete the painting, and deliver to the couple once complete.

Do I need to provide any equipment?

Just access to a power point. I provide my own painting bar with display stand, all the paper, paints and have my own light. If you prefer me to be at a table, this will need to be provided.

I’m Poppy, the artist behind the Live character paintings.

I have been painting for over 20 years, studying illustration at university in the UK.

Being able to capture a person in a quick 5 minute sketch is no easy feat, but having background in illustration and character drawing, together with my live wedding experience makes the perfect combination.

I love being able to offer guests their own mini artworks and love watching them delight in seeing themselves come to life on the paper.
